Science fiction is in the spotlight in 2024 and not just in cinema. The small screen also has the right to its share of works including series which delight subscribers to the various SVOD services. This year, it’s a Netflix exclusive that gets the highest score of 100%, even if Disney+ is holding up!
The best sci-fi series is on Netflix in 2024
The South Korean series “Parasyte: The Grey” is a free live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga “Parasyte” by Hitoshi Iwaaki. The production is entrusted to Yeon Sang-ho, known for his striking works in the horror and fantasy genre. Notable credits include “Last Train to Busan” (2016), a zombie film acclaimed for its controlled tension, and its sequel “Peninsula” (2020). Yeon Sang-ho also directed the series “Hellbound” (2021), exploring supernatural and societal themes. The screenplay for “Parasyte: The Grey” is co-written by Yeon Sang-ho and Ryu Yong-jae, the latter of whom became known with his work on the series “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area” (2022), adaptation Korean from the famous Spanish series. Production is handled by Climax Studio, renowned for its involvement in projects such as “Hellbound” and “DP” (2021), series praised for their narrative and visual quality.
The casting brings together leading actors. Jeon So-nee plays Jeong Su-in, a young woman confronted with supernatural events. She distinguished herself in productions such as “When My Love Blooms” (2020), where she demonstrated her ability to interpret emotionally complex roles. Koo Kyo-hwan plays Seol Kang-woo, a central character in the fight against the parasites. Koo Kyo-hwan is recognized for his performances in “Peninsula” and “DP”, where his nuanced acting was particularly appreciated. Finally, Lee Jung-hyun plays Choi Jun-kyung, determined leader of a special unit. Lee Jung-hyun, also a popular singer, has participated in films such as “The Battleship Island” (2017) and “Love, Again” (2019), illustrating her versatility.
“Parasyte: The Grey” explore the invasion of Earth by alien parasitic creatures that take over humans as hostskilling them and transforming them into entities capable of shapeshifting. The series follows Jeong Su-in, an ordinary young woman whose life is turned upside down when she is attacked by one of these parasites. At the same time, a special unit led by Choi Jun-kyung mobilizes to eradicate this growing threat, while Seol Kang-woo, a gangster, tries to find his younger sister by all means.

“An entertaining and interesting sci-fi thriller”
The series received an excellent reception from the press with a score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics point to its effectiveness as a horror story, highlighting the monstrous transformations of the possessed humans and the efforts of the authorities to contain the infiltration. According to The Age, “it works best as a horror tale, with the possessed humans transforming into monstrous form as the authorities try to quell the invasion.” Espinof sums up the overall sentiment by describing the series as “an entertaining and interesting sci-fi thriller.”
IGN Movies highlights “a few clever deviations to round out a fearsome portrayal of its famous monsters,” even if “the characterization never reaches the same heights as the original.” Decider adds that “Parasyte: The Gray has enough action to keep viewers interested, but the story of Su-in’s mutant existence is also what keeps us watching“. Finally, the South China Morning Post observes that “this reinvention is more interested in exploring the thematic potential of the manga concept, rather than its playful side”.

Announced in 2020 during Disney Investor Day, this series rated 100% on Rotten Tomatoes is part of Disney’s efforts to diversify its content by highlighting underrepresented cultures. The title “Iwaju” means “future” in Yoruba, a language spoken primarily in Nigeria and other parts of West Africa. The story is set in a stylized Afrofuturistic version of Lagos, Nigeria, where it explores themes of family, class, innocence, corruption, and the duality between tradition and modernity. The series follows two friends from different social backgrounds and highlights their aspirations in a world where inequalities are exacerbated by technological progress.
