Corriere della Sera recounts Ezio Simonelli's first day as president (elected but not proclaimed) of Lega Serie A in his office. He already behaves like a president with full powers, he wrote a letter where he recalls unity and common interests, but his “more confrontation-oriented actions“.

“In a sort of comedy of the absurd, Ezio Simonelli, elected president of the League of A but not proclaimed, as he was awaiting verification of the compatibility requirements with article 14 of the statute, showed up at the League yesterday morning. And, as his first act in his new role, he canceled the advice that should have examined whether he really is not in a situation of conflict of interest, due to the professional relationships he has with the associates or group leaders“.
According to what the newspaper reports, the new president has resigned from the positions he held in Mondadori, Mediaset and Fininvest, i.e. the holding company which controls Monza. These are the roles that could lead to incompatibility with the position of president of the League
“For the manager, renouncing roles in the boards of auditors of the aforementioned companies is considered a sufficient move to be able to resolve the issue of ineligibility. He feels strong about the support of 14 clubs and the formalization of his election signed by Luca Percassi, vice president of the League, last Saturday. Therefore, not deeming it necessary to produce further self-certifications on his independence, yesterday morning he crossed the threshold of the building. He greeted Paolo Bedin, new president of the Lega di B and spoke with Luigi De Siervo, the CEO whose reconfirmation will be voted on on 10 January. Then he sent a letter to all the clubs regretting not having met the leaders on the day of the white smoke and reminded them of the importance of a compact league not divided by personal interests. Words that, however, accompany actions more oriented towards confrontation“.
For the companies that supported Simonelli the issue is closed. For the others, not really. The clubs that did not vote for him are “disconcerted by the haste with which the manager proclaimed himself, without waiting for the preliminary investigations already decided at last Friday's meeting, they request a complete declaration attesting to the lack of relationships with the associates, a disclosure that also refers to the activity of accountant : there are already those who are ready to ask for compliance with the statute in every judicial setting. The level of conflict is very high, nothing but Christmas spirit“.
