Nicolas Sarkozy becomes the first former French president convicted of corruption and influence peddling. The case, dubbed “the wiretapping affair”, broke out in 2014, almost by chance. The investigators had monitored Sarkozy’s phone as part of the investigation into the suspected financing coming from Gaddafi’s Libya for the presidential campaign won in 2007.
