The ruling of the French Supreme Court is final. At the dawn of his 70s he is held responsible for corruption and influence peddling

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy was definitively sentenced to three years in prison, one without parole and with an electronic bracelet, for corruption and influence peddling. This is the first time in in which a former head of state has been sentenced so heavily. Added to this are three years of ineligibility. The French Supreme Court therefore rejected the appeal presented by the former president. Sarkozy’s legal staff has announced an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights. “Nicolas Sarkozy will obviously comply with the sanction imposed, which is now definitive,” Patrice Spinosi, Sarkozy’s lawyer, told Agence France Presse. “In the next few weeks he will turn to the European Court, as is now his right, to obtain the guarantee of the rights that the French judges have denied him”, he added. Now Sarkozy, 69 years old (70 years old soon) will find himself before a judge for the execution of the sentence and to find out the terms for the electronic bracelet. You may also ask not to serve this period.

«Bismuth», the case for which Sarkozy was convicted

Sarkozy was found guilty of having entered into a “corruption pact” with Gilbert Azibert, a senior magistrate at the Court of Cassation, in 2014, together with his legal historian Thierry Herzog, so that the latter would communicate information to him and attempt to influence the magistrates on a appeal concerning him in the Bettencourt case. In exchange for his help, the judge was promised an honorary position in the principality of Monaco. Both Sarkozy, Thierry and the judge have always rejected the accusations. Also because, in support of their thesis, there would be no trafficking in influence because the toga never obtained the desired place.
