A human toll difficult to assess

According to the French authorities, Cyclone Chido certainly caused hundreds and perhaps thousands of deaths in the French department located in the Indian Ocean. On Island, from where the State is coordinating relief, the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, refused to give the slightest human toll from the natural disaster while saying he feared that it would be “heavy, too heavy”. The authorities sent a report dated Monday at the end of the day, relayed by Le Parisien in particular. “To date, we deplore the death of 21 people in hospital. 45 absolutely urgently injured have been treated as well as 1,373 relatively urgently injured.”
