With 53 cases of chikungunya in Reunion, the situation worries the authorities. The circulation of the virus is very active, with four outbreaks identified mainly in the South, they fear it could develop into an epidemic.
It must be said that current weather conditions are particularly conducive to the proliferation of mosquitoes.
Faced with this risk, the ARS and the prefect of Reunion Island are activating level 2B of the ORSEC system for combating arboviruses, corresponding to “intensification of autochthonous viral circulation and risk of developing into an epidemic”. This is the last stage before becoming an epidemic.
The authorities therefore need to strengthen public health and mosquito control actions. In municipalities, the maintenance of public and private spaces is reinforced, as is awareness and mobilization of the population and treatment actions.
” The next few weeks will be crucial in the fight against the spread of the disease “, warns the ARS. It invites everyone to take the right actions, in particular by eliminating stagnant water favorable to larval breeding sites and by protecting themselves from mosquito bites.
Four outbreaks were identified in Saint-Paul with 7 cases in Les Aigrettes and 9 cases in Hermitage, in Etang-Salé with 27 cases, in Grand-Bassin and at Ligne-des-400 in Saint-Pierre.
ARS teams are continuing their awareness-raising and mosquito control interventions in the neighborhoods concerned. 2,176 visits to houses or apartments were carried out. 1,278 daytime insecticide treatments were also carried out, around the homes of patients within a perimeter of 100 m.
Several isolated cases have also been reported in Saint-Pierre, Le Tampon and Saint-Louis.
The authorities currently indicate that “ the number of cases remains moderate and without health impact “. Note, dengue also continues to circulate, with 18 cases reported since the end of August in Saint-Pierre, Saint-Joseph, Le Port and Saint-Paul.
