In Reunion, a surge of solidarity quickly appeared after the devastating passage of Cyclone Chido in Mayotte, which caused considerable damage on the island and caused tens of thousands of victims, not counting the deaths of which the number remains still unknown.
The next day, many people began to bring food, water and even clothing to associations or municipalities in Reunion.
In order to structure the aid as best as possible, the prefecture has set up a donation management unit. The CCAS are responsible for handling material donations. The structures and associations that collect them will send them to the nearest CCAS.
Please note, however, that shipments must still be organized and due to local conditions, material donations must be limited to certain foodstuffs, specify the authorities. Please note, donations will be sent from Reunion Island to Mayotte by containers.
On site, water, electricity and cooking facilities are lacking for many victims. Donors are therefore asked to focus on non-perishable and easy-to-consume food:
- Foods in cans are preferred
- Dry foods should be limited to rice, pasta, cakes and sandwich bread only
- Compotes, carton milk and infant milk are also necessary.
Hygiene products are also welcome, as are clothes. The weather conditions, namely high heat, are indeed trying on many levels.
Tarpaulins and DIY materials
The other priority of the victims is also to find shelter. To do this, they need equipment to repair or rebuild, first of all urgently. Certain materials have therefore been identified:
- Large “agricultural” tarpaulins if possible, to cover homes with damaged roofs
- DIY materials
In addition to material donations, fundraisers are also organized. Several organizations have launched appeals, but the prefecture reminds that monetary donations must be directed towards approved civil security associations. This is the case of the Fondation de France, the Red Cross and even Catholic relief.
The authorities specify: “ it is strongly recommended to avoid donations to temporary accounts, online pools or unapproved structures, as these are fraudulent accounts most of the time “.
Please note, the government has announced that donations and payments made from Tuesday December 17 until May 17, 2025 will be eligible for the increased rate of 75% up to a limit of 1,000 euros. For a donation of 100 euros, 75 euros can therefore be deducted from income tax.
This tax boost will apply to donations to associations and foundations recognized as being of public utility working on site to provide free meals to people in difficulty, to promote their housing, including through the reconstruction of residential premises returned uninhabitable, or to provide care to people in difficulty, following Cyclone Chido.
