Economic Update: Chrystia Freeland

It was a few hours before the tabling of the federal government’s economic update that Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland, announced her resignation on the social network X. This is what - reports , this Monday.

In this publication, Ms. Freeland explains that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was preparing to replace her and had offered her another position within the Cabinet. What followed was a moment of reflection on her part, which ended with the conclusion “that in (her) eyes, the only honest and viable path was to resign from the Cabinet.” The letter also mentions a disagreement between her and the Prime Minister over the best path forward for Canada. Disagreement which, again according to -, would be linked to the $250 check and the TPS holiday.

The rest of the letter paints a picture of the American tariffs, mentioning the work that will have to be done to avoid the threat looming over the Canadian economy. Ms. Freeland also wrote that “it is inevitable that our mandate (that of the Liberals) in government will end” and then that she committed to running again in her riding of Toronto in the next federal election.
