The first group of M1 Abrams main battle tanks arrived in Taiwan from the United States. They are among 108 units approved for sale to Taiwan by the first administration of Donald Trump in 2019.
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense says 38 tanks arrived early Monday morning at the army’s armored training command in Hsinchu County.
A number of trailer trucks were seen outside the facility, carrying what appear to be covered M1 Abrams tanks.
According to the ministry, the M1A2T Abrams tank has a high attack capacity with its 120-millimeter cannon and high mobility, reaching a maximum speed of 67 kilometers per hour.
According to Taiwanese media, 42 additional units will be delivered in 2025, followed by 28 in 2026.
Taiwan acquired these advanced tanks as part of its efforts to modernize equipment and strengthen defense capabilities.
China increases military pressure on Taiwan, considering President Lai Ching-te a separatist.
It has repeatedly organized large-scale military exercises around the island. In December, it deployed numerous military and coast guard vessels to waters near Taiwan.
