After two months of open war, a ceasefire was declared on November 27. But both parties accuse each other of not respecting it.
One person was killed in an Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon on Saturday, the Lebanese Health Ministry said, more than two weeks after a fragile ceasefire between Israel and the Hezbollah. “Israeli enemy drone strike leaves one dead” in the Marjayoun region, the ministry said in a statement.
Lebanon’s official Ani news agency reported that a car was targeted in the area. The Israeli army indicated earlier on Saturday that it had “attacked rocket launch pads ready to be launched and directed towards Israeli territory, which constitutes a violation of the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel”without specifying the location.
The ceasefire came into force on November 27 after two months of open war between Israel and the pro-Iranian Islamist movement Hezbollah, but both camps accuse each other of repeated violations. On Saturday, Ani said the Israeli army dynamited houses in Kfar Kila, a border village. She also reported explosions and automatic weapons fire “by Israeli soldiers” in the border village of Maiss al-Jabal. The agency added that the Lebanese army was inspecting some villages and detonating munitions abandoned by the Israeli army in the Tire region on Saturday.
Ceasefire violations listed
As part of the truce agreement, the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers are to deploy to southern Lebanon and the Israeli army to withdraw over a period of 60 days. Hezbollah must withdraw its forces north of the Litani River, around 30 kilometers from the border, and dismantle its military infrastructure in the south.
The United States and France are part of the five-party committee, with Lebanon, Israel and the UN force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), supposed to maintain dialogue between the parties and ensure that violations of the ceasefire -fire are listed and treated. The Lebanese army indicated on Wednesday that it had deployed around the town of Khiam, 5 km from the border, in coordination with UNIFIL, after a withdrawal of Israeli troops from this area. The war between Hezbollah and Israel has left nearly 4,000 dead in Lebanon and devastated strongholds of pro-Iranian formation.
