Bad news in the world of Quebec baseball.
Once again this year, Jacques Doucet was passed over for the Ford C. Frick Award, which is given by the Hall of Fame and which recognizes a member of the media (game description) for his or her contribution.
It’s becoming a bad habit to write a text like this.
Tom Hamilton received the honor this year, as announced by the Hall of Fame. It will therefore be part of the annual ceremony in Cooperstown in 2025.
For the fourth time in his career, Mr. Doucet was ignored. After all, voters tend to go for a man who speaks a language they can understand.
Americans cannot understand how creating a baseball lexicon in another language is an achievement worthy of recognition from the Hall.
And Jacques Doucet didn’t just invent a lexicon: he was excellent in describing matches.
But hey. It was to be expected that people who couldn’t even recognize his voice wouldn’t vote for him to win the Ford C. Frick Award this year. What a lack of respect.
The more time passes, the more unlikely it is to see the voice of the Expos and of baseball in French receive this honor. Mr. Doucet’s health is not improving and if we want to honor him with dignity, time is running out.
But unfortunately, baseball people are missing something. It shouldn’t hurt them, we agree.
