“I have taken many, many photos of squirrels in many situations over the years in Italy. This one seemed really funny to me and in a rather strange position, because this is the exact moment when the squirrel detaches its hind legs from the trunk to enter its hiding place, says professional photographer Milko Marchetti. Every time I showed this image, the audience always burst out laughing, so I had to present it [au concours]!»
His victory at the recent Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards gala, held in London this week, allows Mr. Marchetti to collect top honors. As rewards: a photography bag, a hand-carved trophy by a Tanzanian artist and, above all, a safari in the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya.
Launched in 2015, this international competition of British origin rewards the funniest and unusual photos of animals in the wild, particularly in an effort to highlight the importance of protecting wildlife. This year, more than 9,000 images were submitted by professional and amateur photographers from all over the world. Around 45 of them were selected to be evaluated by a jury of experts, responsible for the final selection.
