This is a case that dates back to 2011, and yet it is back in the news. In December 2024, Europol, the European criminal police agency, placed Karim Ouali, prime suspect in the Basel- airport murder on its list of Europe’s most wanted criminals.

An ax murder

As a reminder, Karim Ouali is suspected of the murder of Jean Meyer, head of the control tower at Basel-Mulhouse International Airport. On April 27, 2011, the man allegedly dealt eleven blows with an ax to his colleague.

Now aged 48, he is described as someone suffering from paranoia and psychiatric disorders. He would have perfectly organized his escape, withdrawing more than 25,000 euros in cash, renting several cars and changing his identity papers. In more than 10 years on the run, he has been spotted twice in Asia.

The man has tribal tattoos on his chest and thigh, as well as a mole on his right cheek, says Europol.
