A building of a pigsty located on Principale Street in Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague was damaged by a fire early on Wednesday, December 11.

Just before 7 a.m., the municipality’s firefighters were called to the scene. Alain Meloche, director of the Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague Fire Safety Department, confirmed that no animals were in the building which fell prey to the flames.

However, the blaze was so strong that there were many firefighters on the site. They came, in addition to the municipality, from Howick/Très-Saint-Sacrement, Sainte-Barbe, Saint-Stanislas-de-Kostka, Saint-Étienne-de-Beauharnois, Ormstown, Beauharnois and Salaberry-de-Valleyfield.

Hydro-Québec was dispatched to the site to interrupt electrical power in the area. The Community Emergency Measures Unit (UCMU) was also on site.

The particularity of the fire is that it occurred in an area far from the fire hydrants. Many tanks were therefore required to fill swimming pools from which firefighters could draw supplies. A mechanical shovel was also used to control the propagation of the heat source.

More details to come
