A fire broke out this Wednesday morning in Montpellier, near the roof of the church of Saints François, boulevard de Strasbourg, we learned Le Figaro from the firefighters, confirming information from the Free Midday . In videos published by our colleagues on the networks, we can see the top of the monument invaded by thick smoke.
The Sdis 34 firefighters have been mobilized since 9:30 this morning at the corner of the boulevard, near Place Carnot. According to the first elements, it is not a question of arson: the disaster was triggered “while waterproofing work was in progress, with torch welding carried out”indicate our colleagues. A resident of a nearby printing house then alerted the parish priest.
80 firefighters
According to information from Free Middaynearly 80 firefighters were mobilized on site and significant resources were deployed. Two “fire groups”, including two large swinging ladders, a drone and pump-ton vans. Around ten people were evacuated and traffic was closed on Boulevard de Strasbourg.
For now, the flames have been brought under control but the interior of the place of worship is still filled with smoke. Books and equipment present in the room near the start of the fire were, however, able to be evacuated. The mayor and the archbishop of Montpellier should go there, details the local media.
