In a surprising turn of events, Akwa United have tapped their psychologist, Ime Uko, to take the reins as caretaker coach, following the resignation of Mohammed Babaganaru. The announcement comes after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Bendel Insurance, which left the team lagging at the bottom of the league table.
The club’s management confirmed Babaganaru’s departure in a statement, citing the club’s disappointing performances in the league as a significant factor. After 16 matches, Akwa United find themselves in a tricky position, accumulating just 16 points with four wins, four draws and eight defeats.
Following the resignation, club president Elder Paul Bassey expressed his feelings regarding Babaganaru’s departure. He said: “In the tradition of football around the world, when results are not there, it is often the coaches who bear the brunt of the team’s difficulties, regardless of their past successes. Babaganaru is undoubtedly a competent coach, having achieved significant success with various clubs in Nigeria, but this season has not gone as planned for him.”

Bassey continued to pay tribute to Babaganaru for his contributions in the previous season, which were crucial in helping the team avoid relegation. “We appreciate his efforts and the positive impact he has had on the team. It is important to recognize that our current position does not truly reflect his work with the team,” he added.
Currently, with Akwa United’s rich history and pedigree, being trapped in the relegation zone is simply unacceptable. Bassey suggested that while Babaganaru’s resignation is a step in good faith, it may not represent the sole solution to the club’s ills. He also revealed plans to strengthen the squad in the upcoming mid-season transfer window in January.

“Babaganaru understands how these situations work and has graciously accepted the reality of his resignation. We wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Bassey said, describing the former coach as a good man with a strong work ethic, humility and a spirit of collaboration.
As the club searches for a permanent replacement, coach Ime Uko will take on the role of Technical Advisor, supported by assistant coaches, with Umar Abdullahi at the helm. The club will be hoping Uko can inspire a turnaround as they aim to avoid relegation, something the 2021 league champions can barely afford to contemplate.
With pressure mounting, Akwa United will need to gather their strength quickly if they are to avoid a relegation battle at the end of the season.
