the main reactions in Côte-d’Or following the fall of the government

On Monday, Michel Barnier held his government responsible, via article 49.3 of the Constitution, for passing the Social Security budget. In reaction, the RN and the NFP each tabled a motion of censure. That of the left front was accepted with 331 votes, while the necessary majority was 288 deputies.

The consequence is immediate, Michel Barnier is forced to resign, the government is censored and will fall. More than 130 motions of censure have been tabled since 1958 before those announced on Monday, but only one, in 1962, was adopted, which brought down the Pompidou government.

Find below the main reactions of Côte-d’Orienne political figures following this historic event.

For François Sauvadet, Barnier victim of an “unnatural coalition”

François Sauvadet, president of the Côte-d’Or departmental council, paid tribute on X (formerly Twitter) to Michel Barnier and his government “victim of an unnatural LFI/RN coalition which only seeks chaos”.

And to add: “ I call for a coming together of all responsible political families, as we are doing in our communities, to break this impasse and bring the stability that the French expect.”

Pierre Pribetich (PS deputy for the third constituency of Côte-d’Or): “We are ready for a government partnership”

«I have a feeling of seriousness, it is not trivial that a government is overthrown, it demonstrates the depth of the crisis. I hope that the President of the Republic will appoint a left-wing figure who will be able to bring people together to govern . Socialists are ready for a government partnership within the framework of a non-censorship pact to avoid instability. We are on the threshold of a period which requires the President of the Republic to integrate the consequences of the vote of the French during the last legislative elections.»

Océane Godard (PS deputy for the first constituency of Côte-d’Or): “This motion of censure is not synonymous with chaos”

«It is a moment that requires humility and responsibility. It is not with joy of heart that we choose to vote on a motion of censure. What convinced me was the work we did within the socialist group with the perspective of proposing an open government with the parties of the republican arc. This will require compromises, to let go on certain aspects which could not be supported by the other parties. This motion of censure is not synonymous with chaos, it is not in the DNA of the PS, nor in mine .»

Hubert Brigand (LR deputy for the fourth constituency of Côte-d’Or): “A lot of repercussions for the rural world”

«Each MP took his responsibilities, I took mine by not voting on the motion of censure. The country is in a bad situation, the French want stability. There will be many repercussions, especially for rural residents. We are waiting for the appointment of a new Prime Minister, but he will still not have a majority, there is a nine out of ten chance that he will also be censored. Now what do we do?? Those who voted for censure offer no vision for the future.»

Anne-Catherine Loisier (Centrist Union senator from Côte-d’Or): “A new march towards the void”

«The problem with this motion is that it does not suggest any perspective. It was voted on by opposing parties, without any proposal to resolve the challenges we face. It is a purely political and destructive posture, it is a new march towards the void. We have changed the system since the legislative elections, we are in a tripartite system and I do not see what a future majority could be. It is certain that there is something to be seen on the side of moderate socialists, but they have shown no sign of emancipation from the New Popular Front and La France insoumise.»

François Patriat (RDPI senator from Côte-d’Or): “Let’s stop the massacre”

«I regret that irresponsibility and vain quarrels go against the interests of the country and the French. This result is the result of a failure of parliamentarism. The President of the Republic had given the parties the mission to reach an agreement, which they were unable to do. Now let’s stop the massacre and build the widest possible spectrum of the central block. But when I see François Hollande, former head of state, vote for censure, I find it both sad and shocking. Socialists must realize that everything will be more difficult now.»

René Lioret (RN deputy for the fifth constituency of Côte-d’Or): “We can do it again in two or three months”

«It was expected, now the National Rally wants a Prime Minister who is more attentive. We had three red lines, purchasing power, immigration and security, but Michel Barnier did not listen to us. And when I see Gabriel Attal and Laurent Wauquiez hitting on us, they forget that they called to withdraw for La France insoumise… They are reaping the fruit of their policy. What we have just done, we can do again in two or three months if it does not suit us.»

Catherine Hervieu (Ecologists MP for the second constituency of Côte-d’Or): “We are really reaching out”

«This is the result of five months of political impasse, from the moment when Emmanuel Macron did not want to look towards the left and the environmentalists to appoint a Prime Minister. We have taken our responsibilities, now a motion of censure is not an end in itself. I’m not satisfied with that. We need to look to the future and prepare a budget for 2025. We have put forward major lines on which we wish to work in an approach of openness and enlargement. We are really reaching out.»
