DECRYPTION – Wagner's mercenaries were invited to the Central African Republic and Mali after the departure of the French soldiers, making these countries the laboratories of his “know-how”.
At the end of October 2016, France ended Operation Sangaris. The last soldiers, deployed at the end of 2013 to stop the cycle of violence which then shook this former colony, flew away. The Bangui authorities and the just elected president, Faustin-Archange Touadéra, are complaining about this departure which they consider « precipitate »rightly fearing chaos. In vain. This was already the tone in 1997, when Paris closed the two military bases, in Bouar and Bangui, the former “aircraft carrier” of Central Africa.
The French are certain, it is in fact just a goodbye. « We return to the Central African Republic every ten years »then estimates an officer. No one at the general staff or at the Élysée imagines that the internal political situation could improve, nor that a power could be interested in this country forgotten by all. A blindness that France will pay for.
