Brigitte Challande, December 3, 2024. On the evening of December 2, Abu Amir sent us the report of a new initiative.

« The Bread of Hope: Facing the bread crisis in the displaced camps in the southern Gaza Strip

In the context of the disastrous humanitarian conditions experienced by displaced people in the south of the Gaza Strip, the UJFP organization launched a humanitarian solidarity initiative entitled “The Bread of Hope”. This initiative aims to provide bread to displaced children, who suffer daily from lack of food. It represents an urgent response to the catastrophic repercussions of the bread crisis, exacerbated by a serious shortage of flour, which has forced most bakeries to close, leaving thousands of families without access to this basic food.

The causes of the crisis:

Several factors have led to this crisis, starting with the repeated closure of border crossing points, hindering the entry of essential goods and humanitarian aid into the territory. These restrictions imposed by Israeli authorities have directly affected the delivery of flour shipments, a key ingredient for bread production. Furthermore, the diversion of humanitarian aid, notably flour shipments, has worsened the situation, depriving displaced families of their planned rations. In addition, the cessation of activities of many bakeries due to the depletion of flour stocks has paralyzed bread production. Finally, the scarcity of other food resources, such as vegetables and legumes, has made bread the only food option for many families.

The objectives of the initiative:

The “Bread of Hope” initiative seeks to achieve several essential humanitarian objectives. It aims to provide bread to displaced children to guarantee basic daily nutrition, thereby reducing their suffering in precarious living conditions. It also aims to prevent famine among families facing food insecurity. In addition, this initiative intends to offer an immediate humanitarian response, reflecting the values of human solidarity and alleviating the effects of the crisis for the most affected families. In this way, it contributes to temporary food stability, in the hope of alleviating the suffering of the displaced until lasting solutions are put in place.

The importance of the initiative:

The importance of the “Bread of Hope” initiative lies in its role in saving displaced children from the threat of starvation, as this category is the most vulnerable in the camps. In the absence of food alternatives, bread becomes an essential lifeline. This initiative not only provides food, but also helps alleviate the psychological pressure and livelihood difficulties of families living in extremely difficult conditions, offering them a sense of support and solidarity at a time when they need it. most needed.

Implementation of the initiative:

The initiative was recently launched in Al Fajr Camp (Farmers’ Camp), one of the largest IDP camps in southern Gaza. The UJFP distributed large quantities of bread to meet the needs of children and their families: 10 bags of flour were purchased, or 250kg. 3,600 loaves of bread were made, more than 800 children came to help themselves, the remaining quantity was distributed to families in tents. The first phase of the initiative focused on the most affected camps, where humanitarian conditions are most critical.

Looking to the future:

Despite the efforts made, the “Bread of Hope” initiative remains a temporary response to a deeper crisis that requires structural solutions. Solving this crisis requires permanently opening border crossings, facilitating the entry of humanitarian aid without obstacles, and ensuring relief shipments are protected against diversion and abuse. This initiative illustrates the importance of collective work in the face of humanitarian crises, while highlighting the urgent need for lasting solutions to end the recurring suffering of displaced families.

The “Bread of Hope” initiative presents itself as a symbol of hope in a context dominated by pain. It carries a humanitarian message affirming that solidarity can make a big difference in the lives of displaced people, even in the most difficult circumstances. However, the real hope lies in establishing lasting stability, ending the crises that torment Gaza’s residents, and granting them a chance to live in dignity and peace. »
