The justice of Charleston County (North Carolina) gave Jamie Lee Komorski no quarter. The 26-year-old young woman was on trial for causing the death of a 34-year-old American woman who had barely left her wedding ceremony, on April 22, 2023, in Charleston. On Monday, the defendant was sentenced to 25 years in prison for reckless homicide, 15 years for drunk driving causing serious bodily harm and 10 years for misdemeanor drunk driving. Jamie Komorski will serve his sentences concurrently, says ABC 4.
Newly married Samantha Miller and Aric Hutchinson were leaving the party in a golf cart when Jamie Komorski, drunk at the wheel of his car, violently hit them at 105 km/h. The thirty-year-old died in her wedding dress, and her husband was seriously injured.
“That evening, I chose to drive while drinking. (…) This is the worst decision I have made in my entire life. Because of my bad choices, a beautiful wife, sister and mother was killed. And I can only say how much I blame myself,” said the accused, unrecognizable since her first forensic photo was taken.
The young woman apologized to the victim’s family. In the courtroom, Aric Hutchinson burst into tears as he spoke of the last words of the love of his life. “She told me she didn’t want the evening to end. I kissed her on the forehead. And then, I woke up in the hospital,” said the young widower.
The man suffered both broken legs and significant facial fractures and traumatic brain injuries. “I wanted to die that night. I would have liked to see you arrive. I would have jumped out of the cart to be the only one to get run over,” added Aric Hutchinson.
