It was clear that the topic of Florian Wirtz would come up in advance of the cup clash FC Bayern against Bayer Leverkusen (NOW in LIVETICKER) – but this question elicited a hearty laugh from FCB boss Max Eberl.
The fact that Bayern had the right to have the best players in Germany in their squad led to this ARD-Moderator Esther Sedlaczek before the round of 16 in the DFB Cup and then asked the sports director: “Why does Wirtz make every team stronger?”
Eberl laughed, turned to expert Bastian Schweinsteiger and praised: “A clever question. In the back, through the back door.” In response to Sedlaczek’s grinning apology (“That’s a very general question”), Eberl acknowledged him (“absolutely, absolutely”) – and then gave an evasive answer.
“First of all, we are very happy that with Jamal we have an exceptional player from the two in our ranks. And it’s just nice for German football that we have two such exceptional players in our country who can hunt for the title for Germany,” said the Bayern boss.
So Sedlaczek had to dodge – and consult her expert: “So Basti, now you have to serve: What would you do in Max Eberl’s position to bring Wirtz to Bavaria,” the moderator wanted to know.
“Aiaiai, now you’re taking me there,” the Bayern legend complained, but then dreamed of “Wusiala” in Munich: “Well, if you get the two together, of course, that would be something special for Bayern. This is also a sign to the top international clubs, Real Madrid, etc., that you can have players like that in Germany. That such players can also win Champions League titles for German clubs.”
However, a transfer of Wirtz is “of course not that easy,” remarked Schweinsteiger – and also spoke about another challenge: “Tactically, they are both players who play on the ten, half-ten position – and Bayern actually plays along Wingers. You might have to tweak the system a bit.”
At the end of the Wirtz complex, Eberl had to show his colors and became clear.
“No,” said sports director Eberl when asked whether there was contact with Wirtz’s father Hans, who advises his son on contract matters. “We are currently in contact with the players with whom we want to extend,” added Eberl, and Musiala is “our top priority.”
