This year's Rose d'Or winners on stage

LONDON: Netflix's controversial British series *Baby Reindeer* has been crowned best drama at the annual Rose d'Or ceremony, held this evening at Kings Place.

This Clerkenwell Films production, created by Richard Gadd and inspired by his fight against a stalker, triumphed against fierce competition, including the ITV series, *Mr Bates vs The Post Office*, which prompted the government to take measures to compensate the victims of the sub-post office scandal in the United Kingdom.

*Baby Reindeer* is one of three victories for Netflix productions. Actress Ambika Mod won the Emerging Award for her outstanding performance in the adaptation of David Nicholls' novel, *One Day*, while *Squid Game: The Challenge* was awarded in the Competitive Reality category.

In another register, Gary Oldman was crowned Performance of the Year for his role in the hit series *Slow Horses* on Apple +, while the illustrious Italian entertainment star, Rosario Fiorello, was seen award the Honorary Prize for his entire career.

Belgium continues to impress with three victories in various categories. The VRT series *Dertigers 2*, produced by Warner Bros International Television Production Belgium, won the Soap or Telenovela prize. Meanwhile, *Niks Te Zien* (Nothing to See) received the Factual Entertainment award, while the podcast *Batavia* was the first non-English project to win in the Audio category.

For its part, the Norwegian channel NRK achieved a coup by winning the Drama and Sitcom prize for *Dates in Real Life*, beating out other recognized productions such as the Netflix series *Kaos* and * The Gentlemen*. Channel 4's *Taskmaster* competition won the Comedy Entertainment award, and the BBC's *Gladiators* reboot was crowned in the Studio Entertainment category.

Sophie Duker

“The Rose d'Or is the ultimate in entertainment – I bet you're all nervous,” said comedian Sophie Duker, who hosted the ceremony. “But how do you produce great television shows in such a chaotic industry, with 16 generations of iPhones and so many platforms like Disney+, Hulu, Pornhub, Amazon, Netflix…”

“And attention spans are plummeting. Every time I snap my fingers, a TV executive is diagnosed with ADHD – by another executive who also has ADHD! It is said that TV formats are too similar today, without new ideas; it’s always sequels, prequels, reboots – and I know, I suggested some of them. Artificial intelligence is coming to threaten our jobs. But we've already been through this with Ask Jeeves, Clippy and the Magic 8 Ball – they are the pioneers of AI! »
