It’s a macabre discovery. A body was found this Tuesday, December 3 in the rubble of the violent fire which ravaged a building located Montée de la Boucle in Caluire-et-Cuire, near Lyon, on the night of December 2 to 3. The report, provided by the authorities, also shows two serious injuries and two people in relative emergency. Two of them jumped out of the window, according to a source.
“This building has been occupied since October 2023 by around 80 people who came majority of the evacuation of the “Pyramide squat” in the 7th arrondissement” writes the City of Lyon in a press release, adding “express solidarity with the victims and their loved ones as well as the groups that support them.”
other people “involved were taken care of and examined by the emergency services. The victims were transported via a requisitioned TCL bus to a Red Cross reception center. A medico-psychological emergency cell also been activated”, indicated the Rhône prefecture in a press release. The people, now on the street, were welcomed in a nearby gymnasium while awaiting emergency rehousing solutions.
Later in the day, opposition elected officials did not fail to recall the history of this place and raise questions. According to different sources, he had been squatting for around a year. Located in the town of Caluire-et-Cuire, it belongs to the neighboring city of Lyon, following a bequest.
“The city of Lyon had filed a complaint at the time, but did not wish to evacuate the squat while there was still time”according to the chief of staff of the town of Caluire.
The town of Caluire has always considered the building to be dangerous. The electrical installation was not up to standard. Part of a wall had collapsed. The risk was real. This was the meaning of a decree that we had taken to prohibit his habitation, but it had been attacked by associations.
Vincent Amoros, chief of staff of the town of Caluire-et-Cuire

For his part, Pierre Oliver, elected opposition official in the city of Lyon, denounces “a scenario written in advance” and wrote: “the criminal liability of the Mayor of Lyon is therefore engaged here”.
Many times in municipal council, we have denounced the hypocrisy of this so-called policy of hospitality practiced by this majority. 12 days ago, the Mayor of Lyon showed the same passivity with the former Gilibert school located in the 2nd arrondissement, not asking for its evacuation.

Contacted on this subject, the city of Lyon had not yet responded to our requests by mid-afternoon.
The origin of the disaster has not been determined, “an investigation is underway” we were told.
