The Spanish low-cost airline is strengthening its presence in Bordeaux-Mérignac. Present on the platform for 11 years, it has just announced five new destinations this December 3: Marseille (four times a week from May 30), Malta (twice a week from May 30), Bari in Italy (two flights per week from May 31), Alicante in Spain (two flights per week, three in summer, from May 31), and Alghero in Sardinia (twice a week, from July 4). They are in addition to the last three presented in October to Barcelona, Menorca (Spain) and Charleroi (Belgium).
Volotea thus becomes the leading airline at Bordeaux-Mérignac airport in terms of number of destinations, 35 in total in eight countries (Spain, Algeria, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Morocco and Malta).
A new plane and jobs at stake
From May 2025, Volotea will welcome a new Airbus A320 to its Bordeaux base, thus strengthening its role as the second largest airline at Bordeaux airport in terms of capacity. With a fleet which will now number three aircraft, the company will offer a record annual capacity of 1.2 million seats, an increase of 38% compared to this year and 71% compared to 2019. This new aircraft will also allow creation of 30 direct jobs, bringing the total to 110 employees, and nearly 630 indirect jobs.
“Volotea is not only an airline, it is a driving force behind regional dynamism and a trusted partner for passengers and the Girondine community. This development would not have been possible without the unwavering support of Volotea Airport. Bordeaux […] Together, we actively contribute to promoting the region and supporting its local vitality,” declares Gilles Gosselin, France manager of Volotea.
“This strengthening of the Volotea base in Bordeaux is also a strong signal for the economic and tourist dynamism of our region,” says Cyrielle Clément, responsible for line development at Bordeaux airport.
France, strategic pillar of the Volotea model
The company employs 820 people in France (out of its 2,100 in total). France is by far its biggest market; it will deploy an offer of more than 8 million seats there in 2025 (out of 13 million in total), an increase of 8% compared to 2024. It provides more than 270 connections there (100 more than in 2019).
