Last year, the remake ofIn the West, nothing new by the German Edward Berger won, to everyone’s surprise, four Oscars – that of best foreign film, plus those for music, photography and decorations. Stroke of luck for this 50-year-old filmmaker who appeared out of nowhere? Certainly not in the eyes of those who were able to see this impressive film during its short run in theaters or later on Netflix. And in reality, Berger had already signed four feature films that were more or less noticed in Germany (including Jack, in competition at the Berlinale in 2014), without letting his talent be spoiled by twenty years of TV series.
So here comes the hour of confirmation, and it is dazzling: with Conclavea major Anglo-Saxon production, he definitively joins Steven Spielberg, Roman Polanski and Ang Lee in the ranks of the best practitioners of classically crafted cinema who nevertheless knows how to remain constantly inspired. Without doubt the one we miss the most today.
