THE services de streaming such as Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV+ are increasing their prices in Switzerland, a marked trend over the last 18 months. This increase reflects different strategic choices among the platforms, but also a context of increasing diversification of content and increased competition.
In Switzerland, streaming subscriptions are no longer just a luxury, but a central element of digital entertainment. However, their financial accessibility is decreasing, forcing many consumers to rethink their choices in an increasingly segmented market.
A skyrocketing price
Streaming platforms, increasingly popular in Switzerland, continue to increase their prices. Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, among others, have successively adjusted their subscriptions in recent months. This trend marks a turning point for a market which, despite fierce competition, is experiencing an almost general increase in costs. L'Disney+ standard subscriptionfor example, has recently been revised to 14,90 CHFup 15.5% compared to its previous price. Netflixmarket leader, now displays a monthly price of 20.90 CHF for its standard offer. These increases also affect other platforms like Sky Showwhich reorganized its prices in May 2024, or even Apple TV+whose prices jumped by more than 30% at the end of 2023.
WhileAmazon Prime maintains a competitive rate of 9,99 CHFpositioning itself as one of the cheapest international services, consumers must face a constantly evolving offer. This phenomenon is not limited to international platforms alone, as even local services, such as OnePlus, are adapting their pricing models, although they remain more affordable.
A diversified but unevenly distributed offering
If prices increase, the content and strategies of the platforms also vary. Netflix, with its catalog of more than 7663 titleslargely dominates the market in terms of quantity. It is closely followed by Amazon Prime, which also offers a wide choice of films and series. Conversely, Apple TV+ takes a minimalist but qualitative approach, with only 252 titlesemphasizing exclusive productions with high added value. This difference in catalog size is reflected in the average cost per content. In detail, Apple TV+ remains one of the most expensive services for each title, while Amazon Prime, at only 0.14 cents per content on average, offers a unbeatable value for money.
Content resolution, now a key criterion for many users, also influences prices. While the majority of platforms impose supplements to access the 4K qualityApple TV+ and Amazon Prime integrate it without additional costs in their basic subscriptions. This strategic choice makes them particularly attractive for fans of ultra-high definition content, where Disney+, Netflix and Sky Show apply premiums. 30 to 40% for the same quality.
A changing market
The price increase also reflects deeper changes in the streaming world. In Switzerland, consumers are faced with a range of offers which continues to diversifyboth in terms of content and prices. The platforms adopt various strategies to enrich their catalogs. Indeed, Disney+ and Apple TV+ mainly rely on their original productionswhile Netflix and Amazon Prime invest in rights for third-party content in order to appeal to a wider audience.
Despite these differences, one constant remains, and that is the efforts of platforms to retain their subscribers while justifying price increases. This development could lead many households to re-evaluate their entertainment priorities, especially since promotional offers, often limited, do not always compensate for the increases.
