A huge relief operation took place on the night of Monday 2 to Tuesday 3 December 2024 in a building in Caluire-et-Cuire, Montée de la Boucle, very near Lyon.
The cause was a violent fire in a squatted building.
The balance sheet currently shows two people seriously injured.
A disaster in the middle of the night
The fire broke out in the building around 1 a.m. Very quickly, numerous emergency resources were sent to the site: nearly 140 Rhône firefighters as well as SAMU 69 teams.
A large security perimeter has also been installed to allow emergency professionals to work. In particular, a large scale was deployed.
The fire was brought under control around 3:30 a.m.
The wounded defenestrated
According to emergency services, at least four people were injured. Among them, two were in a state ofabsolute emergency during their transport to a hospital. Two people who would have deliberately defenestrated to try to escape the flames.
Search operations were still underway to make sure there were no other victims in the rubble.
In addition, around fifty people were picked up by emergency services and then transported in a requisitioned TCL bus to a reception center managed by the Red Cross.
Ongoing investigation
An investigation should be quickly opened by the Lyon public prosecutor’s office to understand what exactly happened in this building which was squatted by many families. More than twenty national police officers also intervened on site during the night.
For the moment, the origin of the fire therefore remains unknown.
