Ski jumper Katharina Schmid also made it onto the podium in Engelberg, but this time her biggest competitor secured victory.

The Slovenian Nika Prevc thwarted Katharina Schmid's (victory) plans at the World Cup in Engelberg. The 28-year-old from Allgäu narrowly missed her fifth World Cup victory this season on Saturday (December 21, 2024). Schmid came second behind Prevc, who was the best in both rounds. Thea Minyan Bjoerseth took third place. The Norwegian briefly had to worry about her place on the podium because she was mistakenly expected to be disqualified.

Prevc has strong nerves to win

Schmid, who impressively dominated the World Cup and recently won clearly in China, countered Prevc's top jump strongly in the first round. The Slovenian advanced 140 meters, Schmid flew to 135 meters in poorer conditions and less run-up and was only 0.9 points behind in second place at halftime. In the final, Schmid landed at 123.5 meters. Prevc carried it to 134.5 meters. In the end she won clearly.

“I'm just happy that it's going this way”said Schmid and added: “The jumps were not optimal. In the second I had a bit of stress, everything was a bit uncontrolled at the top, but it went well and I was just happy to be on the podium again.”

Friday after bad luck in the top ten

At the last World Cup weekend before the two-night tour in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberstdorf, Selina Freitag, who fell in China, also appeared to have recovered well. With 126 and 125.5 meters, the Saxon landed in eighth place, but was not satisfied with that: “I had really good qualifications, but unfortunately I didn’t carry that into the competition.”

Agnes Reisch, who came to Engelberg rested and without travel stress, was also probably satisfied with her jumps. After her break in China, she came back strongly and sat in the leaders' box for a long time with a jump of 130 meters in the first round. In the final she jumped ten meters shorter, but was able to celebrate 13th place and a lot of World Cup points. Juliane Seyfarth (123.5 m/123 m) came 17th in the final ranking.

Wood missed the final by a whisker

After great jumps at the last World Cup, Alvine Holz was missing a bit of luck in Engelberg. The 20-year-old from Berlin, who only started ski jumping at the age of 14, landed at 112 meters and missed the second round in 41st place by a place or two points.

Torazza fails to qualify at home game

World Cup newcomer Emely Torazza, on the other hand, did not make it through qualification when she returned to her old home. With 94.5 meters, the 20-year-old missed the top 40 competition by three places. Torazza was born in Weimar and grew up in the canton of Glarus in Switzerland. She won the Swiss championship title twice, but decided to change associations in the spring of 2024 and has been part of national coach Heinz Kuttin's team ever since.
