The city of Lyon lost inhabitants between 2021 and 2022, according to the latest INSEE census published Thursday December 19, 2024. But the trend is not not the same everywhere in the city: some districts are gaining population while others are losing it.

Here are the latest developments district by district in Lyon, while the third city in could quickly lose this place to .

The 7th arrondissement gains residents

The population of the 1st arrondissement stagnates in 2022, like that of the 3rd, 5th and 9th arrondissements, which see very slight increases. The 2nd arrondissement lost a few hundred inhabitants, just like the 4th.

The biggest gaps take place in the 6th and 8th arrondissement, which lose more than 1,000 inhabitants each, while the 7th saves honor by winning more than 1,500 souls. Below, here is the complete list according to INSEE as well as the average annual rate of variation.

  • Lyon 1: 29,040 (29,016 in 2021), or -0.3% between 2016 and 2022.
  • Lyon 2: 29,880 (30,485 in 2021), or -0.3% between 2016 and 2022.
  • Lyon 3: 101,523 (101,302 in 2021), or -0.1% between 2016 and 2022.
  • Lyon 4: 35,232 (35,603 in 2021), or -0.4% between 2016 and 2022.
  • Lyon 5: 48,929 (48,711 in 2021), or -0.2% between 2016 and 2022.
  • Lyon 6: 50,718 (52,007 in 2021), or -0.2% between 2016 and 2022.
  • Lyon 7: 87,491 (85,897 in 2021), or +1.1% between 2016 and 2022.
  • Lyon 8: 84,956 (86,326 in 2021), or +0.1% between 2016 and 2022.
  • Lyon 9: 53,657 (52,903 in 2021), or +0.9% between 2016 and 2022.

Between 2016 and 2022, only the 7th, 8th and 9th arrondissements will therefore see their population increase. It is falling everywhere else in Lyon, whose population varies on average by + 0.2% between 2016 and 2022.

For its part, the metropolis of Lyon gains more than 9,000 inhabitants in one year. Same observation for the Rhône, ever more populated, which recorded an increase of + 0.6%. There are now 1,433,613 inhabitants in the metropolis and 1,907,982 residents of Rhone.
