France Gaz calls on public decision-makers in an article published on November 29. Representing the gas industry in France, the organization calls for not to underestimate the role of gas, particularly in its renewable form, in the energy transition.
While the public consultations on the multi-year energy programming (PPE) and national low-carbon strategy (SNBC) projects are underway, France Gaz denounces a strategy too oriented towards electricity and calls not to underestimate the role of green gases in the energy mix.
Referring to an RTE report, France Gaz recalls that around 50% of future energy needs will not be covered by electricity. “ How will we manage to decarbonize the remaining 50% if we start today to weaken the most dynamic complementary solutions, such as those offered by green gases? » asks the association in a column published on November 29.
Too often described as “ transition energy »green gas could represent 30% of the French energy mix in 2050, while being entirely produced on national territory, recalls the organization. With 13 TWh of capacity currently deployed, biomethane production is already equivalent to the power of two nuclear reactors.
Budgetary choices that worry
For France Gaz, current budgetary choices, such as the increase in taxes on gas consumers, including for biomethane, are causing concern.
« Sweden exempts consumers of green gas from carbon taxes. The European Commission has validated this measure. Isn’t this an example we should look at more closely? » asks the association.
Call for a strategic review
For France Gaz, future decisions, both in the Finance Law and in the PPE, must reflect a balance between energy sovereignty, ecological transition and support for national industry. The organization advocates for a more inclusive strategy, promoting diverse solutions.
« The economies of the present must not obliterate the future », she insists, calling on the French to witness the potential consequences of an electro-centrism deemed excessive.
