A football match turned into a deadly crowd movement in Guinea on Sunday December 1st. The final of a tournament organized by the ruling junta took place in Nzérékoré (Guinea), the second largest city in the country. The stadium, still under construction, was packed. The meeting was tense between the two teams. In the 83rd minute, a penalty, awarded in favor of the home team, was contested by the opposing players.
The supporters then invaded the field. “The players started to throw themselves at the referee. The public, which was getting impatient, started throwing stones. The police decided to throw tear gas,” says a journalist present on site. Under the gas cloud, the slightest exit has been transformed into a bottleneck. Some took the risk of climbing the surrounding walls, which are at least three meters high.
According to initial reports, the tragedy left at least 56 dead and many injured.
