Windows 11 24H2: one last big update is coming to end 2024

The latest news was that Microsoft was not expected to offer any new updates other than security patches for Windows 11 24H2 before 2025. It seems that the Redmond firm has decided to more or less review its plans. Indeed, on the occasion of the next security update Patch Tuesday coming this December (the 10th), the latest version of the PC operating system will not only benefit from numerous fixes, but also some new features.

A substantial patch to end the year

First of all, if you find the lower right corner of your screen too busy, good news: it will first be possible to adopt a more compact view for the display of the time and date in the bar tasks, while it will also be possible to permanently hide the notification bell from the settings. These will always be accessible by clicking on the time.

More useful perhaps, jump lists (the menus that are displayed when right-clicking on an application icon in the taskbar or the start menu) will be enriched. This is particularly the case for system applications, which will display more functionalities in these menus, including that of launching these applications as administrator.

The Dynamic Lighting Parameters tool, allowing you to control the behavior of RGB devices without going through the manufacturers' applications, will also be expanded with this patch. New lighting options will be included, while these parameters will now be grayed out if no compatible device is detected.

A final round of fixes

The task manager will display more information on the types of disks installed (HDD, Sata SSD or NVMe SSD). Finally, a little harmonization in the interface is to be expected, as well as fixes around compatibility issues with specific equipment.

We can only hope that these new features will not bring new bugs to an operating system which certainly does not need them, Microsoft having spent the last few weeks correcting most of the problems of Windows 24H2 following its deployment mixed. Remember in particular that the migration to the 24H2 update has been temporarily suspended on PCs where recent Ubisoft games are installed.

Windows 11 is the new version of Windows, the paid operating system developed by Microsoft for PC-type computers. Faster than Windows 10, it is also visually different and prettier.
