An explosion at a factory near Alicante, in southeastern Spain, left three people dead and seven injured on Wednesday, emergency services said.
The events took place in an industrial zone of Ibi, around forty kilometers from the center of Alicante, in an expanded polystyrene production factory. The alert was given shortly before 12:00 p.m.
“Three people died and seven were injured” in the “explosion” of a factory, emergency services in the Valencia region, where Alicante is located, said on X at the start of the afternoon.
“A boiler exploded in a company, causing three deaths and three serious injuries,” said Valencian Community emergency director Alberto Martin on public television TVE.
The neighboring company was hit by the “shock wave”, which killed one of its employees, he added.
According to the firefighters, “following this explosion, part of the industrial building collapsed, the roof fell and approximately half of the surface of the building fell, which means that some interior walls also collapsed.”
On site, walls of the factory were damaged and numerous plastic crates littered the ground outside the Industrias Climber company.
Speaking to MPs, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed “the full support of the Spanish government” to the victims of the accident, as well as to the firefighters and rescue workers working on site.
