The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has expressed concern over the software update practices of connected device manufacturers. According to the organization, many consumers are left with vulnerable or outdated devices due to a lack of sustained or regular updates. This situation exposes users to security risks and reduces the lifespan of their products.
To address this problem, the FTC is considering rules requiring manufacturers to provide software updates over a minimum period of time and to communicate transparently on the subject. This initiative aims to protect consumers and promote more sustainable use of connected devices.
Out of 184 products studied, it reveals that 89% of “smart” products do not specify how long they will receive software updates. This information is nevertheless crucial for their security and functionality. A majority of connected devices risk becoming obsolete without these updates, exposing users to security risks.
She even suggests that it is already illegal in certain specific cases. Not indicating anywhere the duration of software updates for a connected product sold in the United States for more than $15 is not compliant. Hiding the information at the bottom of the site is not, but it is precisely on this point that it takes a serious look. The FTC has not yet clarified its concrete intentions. However, this official alert gives hope that this crucial information will one day be clearly displayed by all sellers for each connected product.
Apple the good student
In 2024, Apple continues to be one of the leaders in software update longevity for its devices. iPhones typically get 5-7 years of major iOS updates. For example, models like the iPhone XS (released in 2018) still receive the latest updates in 2024.
iPads follow a similar timeline, with software updates lasting up to 6-8 years, depending on the model. Macs receive new versions of macOS for about 7-8 years, or longer for security updates. Apple Watches receive watchOS for approximately 5-6 years, although older models may lose some features.
