It’s a great victory for an artisanal bakery from Angoulême (Charente). In December 2023, businesses had the unpleasant surprise of seeing a large industrial brand set up just a few meters from it. But less than a year after its opening, it lowered the curtain, Saturday November 16, reports Free Charente.
“We resisted because customers come for the contact, almost everything is homemade here” explains the manager of the artisanal bakery to the local daily. “The real bread, the real baker, it is there,” assures a customer at the microphone of BFMTV. The small bakery recognizes that this competition has pushed it to innovate even more and surpass itself to the delight of residents.

The closure of the chain is also good news for the vice-president of the Agglomeration of Angoulême, delegate to local economic circuits, who has always supported small bakers. The couple of managers also assured that they were ready to help other traders to preserve the craftsmanship. The bakers would like to see a new shop set up, in order to “complete the street offering, such as fruit and vegetables”.
For his part, the manager of the industrial bakery, which has two other points of sale in the department, in Champniers and Cognac, did not wish to speak. A local shopkeeper confided to Free Charente : “According to the feedback I have, they did not achieve their objectives.”
