Among the regions most exposed to radon in Haut-Rhin, the territory of Pays Thur Doller has launched an awareness campaign aimed at the population, reports the site News Haut-Rhin . To do this, it joined forces with the approved air quality monitoring association ATMO Grand Est and the Regional Health Agency (ARS), in order to inform residents of the risks linked to the presence of this natural radioactive gas in homes.
This campaign, relayed on their site, aims to disseminate simple actions to limit exposure to radon in the areas concerned. In addition, from January 2025, volunteer residents of the 46 municipalities of Pays Thur Doller will be able to receive a free kit to install in their home, which allows the concentration of gas to be measured indoors.
Certain carcinogen
Radon is a radioactive natural gas classified “definite human carcinogen” since 1987 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). It is present in 32 of the 46 municipalities of Pays Thur Doller, with a risk ” pupil “ in some of them, according to the Territorial and Rural Balance Pole.
This gas represents a real danger to health, especially when present in high concentrations. Its presence can promote the development of bronchopulmonary cancers, “especially if you are exposed to this gas for a long period of time”specifies the territory’s website. According to the same source, “it would be responsible, in France, for 5 to 12% of lung cancers”.
