Murder in Cacouna: defense waives preliminary investigation

Scheduled for five days, the preliminary investigation of Steve Chassé, who is notably accused of the first degree murder of his neighbor Pierre Bélisle, was to begin this Monday at the Rivière-du-Loup courthouse, but the defense gave up this procedure which would have allowed him to question witnesses before the trial.

The accused’s lawyer, Me Félix-Antoine Doyon, rather suggested to the court that he is considering an agreement with the public prosecutor allowing the case to be resolved without a trial.

As cases of first degree murder must be resolved in Superior Court, Steve Chassé’s cases are postponed until the end of the criminal proceedings, on December 2, in Rimouski.

First degree murder

First degree murder means premeditated murder. According to information provided to the court, the crime was committed around September 26, 2023.

Steve Chassé is also accused of attempted murder of two police officers (1 count per police officer), indignity to a corpse and recklessly discharging a firearm.

Technical landfill

Remember that the human remains of Pierre Bélisle were found at the Cacouna technical burial site a few days after the arrest of Steve Chassé.

During a first appearance on October 13, 2023, before the discovery of the body, Steve Chassé was accused of inciting hatred, recklessly discharging a firearm and carrying a weapon with a dangerous purpose for events that would have occurred between September 26 and October 4, 2023.
