The 8th edition of the 2024 barometer car repair price iDGarages was created from 2 million quotes generated during the first half of 2024 on the iDGarages site.
The quotes concern the most common mechanical services, carried out in more than 4,300 independent garages, brand agents, car centers, multi-brand brands, throughout France.
The increase in prices initiated by inflation in 2023 continues but at a more moderate pace (+7.64% between 2024 and 2023).
Over the years, the services become more and more technical because cars are more complex due to technological developments.
This leads to an increase in the cost of certain services.
The price of automobile repairs is impacted by the cost of spare parts and supplies necessary for the services.
Increasing repair complexity and stricter environmental requirements also contribute to rising auto repair prices.
Inflation is driven by the increase in the price of parts, particularly braking and overhaul.
A general overhaul which cost on average 294 euros in 2023 rises to 332.87 euros in 2024, an increase of 13.22 euros.
The cost of mechanics’ labor is increasing less quickly than inflation (+4.88% over one year).
In order to remain competitive, garages strive to stabilize their prices, seeking to align with the purchasing power of customers in order to remain competitive while maintaining profitability. This year we note a strong impact on services with the change of “parts”: such as braking where the front discs and pads take 20.63% in one year, as well as the general overhaul intervention, which is experiencing an evolution of price of 13.22%.
Conversely, we notice a slight change in the price of services with all-inclusive packages, such as air conditioning overhaul which increases by 5.75% and also a low impact on services with mainly labor such as engine descaling which remains on average almost at the price in 2023 (plus 0.31%) or front axle parallelism (plus 0.98%).
Fabien Borsa, CEO of idGarages.com, explains “Last year was marked by high inflation which forced mechanics to adapt by focusing on maintaining the margin or on the number of workshop entries. This “post-inflation” year is marked by a slowdown in the increase. It is sensitive regarding the prices of spare parts, and the increase in labor costs is relatively limited (4.88% compared to 3.5% in 2023), which explains why the prices of all-inclusive packages have experienced a more moderate increase. »
