The 2019 Nvidia Shield TV will not benefit from the security patch at the same time as the 2015 and 2017 models. In fact, the integration of this patch breaks the integration of Google Home.
Recently competing with the Google Streamer TV, the Nvidia Shield TV is one of the longest supported Android devices. If there were only the 2019 model, launched five years ago, the tracking would already be correct for a TV box. But if we add the 2017 and even 2015 models which both benefit from Android 11 and various patches, the follow-up is exemplary.
The latest patch has just arrived on the two oldest Shields. This is a set of fixes applied to the latest update 9.1.1 launched in October 2022. It will be pushed into version 33.2.0.295 of the TV box software.
Why is this update a little special?
As Nvidia explains in a post on its forum, the patch includes the usual “security improvements”. He also adds two points:
- French is added to parental controls;
- “Security improvements” for 4K DRM playback
On the other hand, the update seems to cause a problem with the 2019 model. It is not currently pushed on this model and will arrive later.
The reason for this postponement? Google Home integration skips after the update on this specific model. We don't know what consequences this could have precisely: does the Google Home application no longer launch, which does not seem very serious unless you have based your entire home automation on your Shield TV? Or are the various Google Home features no longer working? In which case the possibility of chromecaster content would no longer be usable for example, which is much more annoying for a device designed to manage multimedia streams.
The update is available in beta and we do not know at this stage the schedule for deployment in stable version. The version of the Shield Experience remains unchanged, it is 9.1.1.
