They kept staring at him, searching for his gaze for more than three hours, while sometimes fighting back the tears that came to their eyes. But behind the glass of the accused box, Ludovic Bertin remained unmoved, without once turning his head in their direction. Tried for the murder of Victorine Dartois, committed in September 2020 in Villefontaine, the accused was hard pressed to look the young woman’s parents in the eyes, not even when he spoke to them.
“I am happy that the trial can begin to provide my explanations to the Dartois family, even if I am aware that everything I can say will not repair what I did,” says the father of the family, looking towards jurors on the first day of his trial. Wearing a light gray polo shirt, the man then stares at the ground. Then sits down again.
On Monday, the debates were solely devoted to the personality of the 28-year-old accused and his life journey. And the man hasn’t been much talkative yet.
