WorkSafeBC has issued two fines totaling $48,000 to two companies after an industrial explosion in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, left two people injured.
Key Energy will have to pay an amount of $6,000, while Secure Energy Services will pay $42,000.
According to inspection reports from WorkSafeBC, Key Energy was performing welding work on June 24 at a facility operated by Secure Energy Serviceswhich processes waste from oil extraction.
According to the workplace regulator, the two companies failed to take necessary precautions before allowing welding above a tank containing flammable chemicals.
An inspector of WorkSafeBC also reports that welders did not use proper equipment to detect flammable gases or vapors in the air before the explosion.
In addition to fines, WorkSafeBC calls on both companies to provide workers with adequate training, and to review their risk assessment and safety practices.
Secure Energy Services et Key Energy did not respond to requests for comment from -/CBC.
Inspection reports show that both companies complied with the orders of WorkSafeBC.
