A man was shot dead after opening fire on security forces in the area of ​​the Israeli embassy in Amman, the capital of Jordan, at dawn on Sunday (November 24). Three members of the Jordanian security services were injured, the official Petra agency also announced.

According to this source, “a person opened fire on a patrol operating in the Rabieh area, where security forces arrived (…) and located the shooter who tried to flee”. “Pursued and surrounded”the suspect “started firing shots at security forces, who in turn applied the rules of engagement, which resulted in the perpetrator being killed”she added.

Government spokesperson Mohammad Momani then denounced “a terrorist attack” against the forces Jordanians, in a press release relayed by the Petra agency, adding that the attacker had a criminal history linked to narcotics. The official, who did not specify the nationality of the attacker, announced the opening of an investigation.

Protests against the Israeli embassy have regularly taken place in recent years in the Rabieh neighborhood, located in the northwest of the Jordanian capital. In 1994, Jordan, where almost half the population is of Palestinian origin, became the second Arab state, after Egypt, to sign a peace treaty with Israel and establish diplomatic relations.

On October 18, two members of the Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood were killed after opening fire on soldiers in Israeli territory, south of the Dead Sea. An Israeli soldier and an Israeli reservist were slightly injured. On September 8, three Israeli security guards were killed when a Jordanian truck driver opened fire at the Allenby crossing, between the occupied West Bank and Jordan, controlled by Israel.
