It was in the heart of the party square that defeat took place. That of peace. “The Mitraillée Ambulance” from Kharkiv has been stopping in Toulouse since Friday and until Sunday, on Saint-Pierre Square. The bullet-riddled vehicle travels across France thanks to the initiative of a collective of more than 45 Franco-Ukrainian associations.
“It brings the war back to us where ultimately, we don’t know it,” comments Marie G. This passerby, aware of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, realizes a little more: “When it started, we were shocked . Today, I admit that I trivialize what is happening,” welcoming this necessary reminder. “It’s like on the highway with the smashed yellow trucks,” quips Donatien. At 7 years old, the very young man from Toulouse does not understand but sees: “it’s shocking and it’s sad,” the kid finally laments in the arms of his dad, Anthony, while reading the signs under the vehicle.
Russia damaged 221 ambulances
Finally, behind the exhibition of this vehicle, there is a triple hope: that of bearing witness to the war crimes perpetrated by Russia in Ukraine and of raising public awareness of the reality of the conflict. But also to raise funds for the purchase of new ambulances essential on the ground.
As of October 7, 2024, according to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Russia has damaged 221 ambulances, destroyed 261, and taken possession of 125 vehicles. Health infrastructure is also targeted: 1,673 medical establishments were damaged, of which 223 were completely destroyed and cannot be restored. More than 180 medical personnel were killed, not counting military doctors or those present in occupied areas.
“The Machine Gun Ambulance” never left the Kharkiv region, partially occupied by the Russians. In September 2022, while Ukraine tries to repel the invader, Russian bombing continues with devastating power. In Stary Saltiv, an injured person, taking refuge in the basement of his building, calls for help. The rescue team rushes to help him. As the mission draws to a close, the ambulance is deliberately targeted by the Russians.
The fact that the vehicle did not explode is considered, according to the associations, to be a miracle, because one of the shrapnel passed through the space between the oxygen bottles. The shells and bullets left indelible marks on the ambulance, which are all proof of these war crimes.
