A brush fire was quickly brought under control Tuesday evening on Île-aux-chats.

Frédéric Paquette, director of the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield Fire Safety Service, confirmed that the blaze started from a camp fire. “The fire spread, probably accidentally,” he said. The fire was not very large. But when the firefighters arrived, no one was on the scene.”

The response time was considered rapid.

Cat Island is a small area where the Chemtrade factory is located. In addition to the access path for employees, the railway line crosses the site.

Rumors arose that the fire could have been started by itinerants who had established a camp. Mr. Paquette, however, clarified that such a possibility is not indicated in the intervention report. To his knowledge, this was a first intervention by firefighters at this location.
