Recent floods in southeastern Spain have killed 230 people. Almost a month after this tragedy, the government adopted, on Thursday, November 28, a new system, “paid climate leave”. According to the Spanish Minister of Labor, Yolanda Diaz, this measure should make it possible to “adapt labor law” to the “climate emergency” context.

In the event of an alert issued by the authorities, workers will benefit from four days' leave. The latter will be paid by the State. “HAS From the moment an authority, whatever it may be, indicates that there is a risk in travel, employees must refrain from going to workr”, detailed Yolanda Diaz on public television RTVE.

The government has not yet released all the details. Several Spanish companies were criticized after the floods arrived at the end of October. They were singled out for asking their employees to stay at work despite the presence of a red alert, issued by the National Meteorological Agency.

This climatic leave cannot exceed four days. However, companies will be able to use partial unemployment schemes, already put in place according to the executive. “We must continue to progress in terms of mobilization, financing and investment to adapt and be more resilient in the face of these types of events.”said the Minister of Economy, Carlos Cuerpo.
