Legislative 2024: what are the different political camps proposing on energy?

The political parties are back on the campaign trail to early legislative elections of June 30 and July 7, decreed after the dissolution of the National Assembly by Emmanuel Macron. To see the programs more clearly, France Bleu invites you to take stock of the measures announced to date in the different camps. This article will be updated as the parties unveil their programs. After Wednesday’s proposals regarding health, focus this Thursday on energy.

The New Popular Front (union of the left)

According to the union of the left, we need “massive investments” in the renewable energies. And this, to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The New Popular Front therefore wants to strengthen industrial sectors, with a slogan: “Making France the European leader in marine energies”mainly with offshore wind turbines.

On the other hand, On the nuclear issue, the left bloc is divided : ecologists and rebels are against, while socialists and communists are for. In this campaign, they agree to keep all the existing reactors, so there would be no closures in the next few years. But should new power plants be built? According to several voices from the New Popular Front, this question would be resolved in the coming months, by parliament, during debates on an energy-climate law. Others suggest waiting until 2027, with the presidential election, or a referendum.

Together (presidential camp)

The current majority intends to continue its policy ofacceleration towards the exit from fossil fuels. She wants more nuclear and renewable energy, to produce more carbon-free electricity. On nuclear power, Gabriel Attal promises to build 14 new reactors, which is eight more than the six already approved and for which the sites have already been chosen. They should, in theory, enter service in 10 to 20 years.

In the meantime and in parallel, the Prime Minister wants “renewable, which is installed more quickly”. The presidential camp mainly relies on offshore wind turbines. They produce more than masts on land thanks to the stronger and constant wind offshore. Three parks are already operating at full capacity on our coasts and others are under construction or planned. The government’s objective is to build around fifty of them by 2050.

The Republicans

For the Republicans, France must invest massively in the construction of nuclear power plants. On the other hand, they are more reserved on renewables. Their positioning was very clear in their program for the Europeans: according to them, it is not “no longer necessary to excessively subsidize renewable energies”. Critical LR “the unreasonable installation of wind turbines”, in the name of landscape protection. The right-wing party also calls for control in the installation of photovoltaic panels.

National gathering

The RN is firmly against wind turbines. In recent years and again in recent weeks, just before the European elections, Jordan Bardella and Marine Le Pen said they wanted to stop them, or even dismantle them. From now on, in this legislative campaign, Jordan Bardella is proposing a moratorium on new construction sites. Clearly, the candidate for Matignon wants to suspend the installation of new wind turbines and the replacement of those which are reaching the end of their cycle.

The president of the National Rally bears this slogan: “Remake France an energy paradise.” This involves, in its program, a major nuclear recovery plan. In 2022, Marine Le Pen promised to build 20 new reactors. The RN does not give figures these days.

Finally, the RN promises to recreate a French solar panel industry, a sector currently in difficulty in the face of Chinese competition.

Reconquest!

No energy measure is part of the “six reasons to vote for the Reconquest candidate” set by Eric Zemmour’s party for the legislative elections.
