From November 18 to 24, the 28th European Employment Week for people with disabilities is taking place. Seven days to raise awareness and change the way we view these workers. Because if their employment rate is increasing, there is still work to be done, particularly in the private sector.

In Champagne-Ardenne, 11,232 people with disabilities are looking for work. Research has improved in recent years, with the period following the health crisis having led to a resumption of activity in all sectors and for all workers.
The current unemployment rate for disabled job seekers is 12%, compared to 7% for ordinary job seekers. Cédric Corsin, director of Cap Emploi de la Marne, is the head of a specialized placement organization, he supports disabled people towards employment as well as businesses. He notes: “ The unemployment rate for disabled workers has fallen by five points in four or five years. Disabled job seekers have benefited from the post-covid recovery, like everyone else. »
Companies with twenty or more employees have an obligation set by the State: to have 6% of people with disabilities in their workforce. In Champagne-Ardenne, this figure is partially respected according to Cédric Corsin: “ In the private sector, we are at 3.5%. There is still a big step to take, but there is progress. Before we had many companies which had a zero rate, which did not take any action to benefit disabled workers. Today, there are fewer of them, which is progress. »
If the margin for improvement is significant in the private sector, in the public sector, on the other hand, the rate set by the State is almost respected. “ Hospitals, local authorities, regional councils, etc. They are not far from 6%. They are around 5.7% » explains the director of Cap Emploi de la Marne.
So where do people with disabilities work? Cédric Corsin explains: “ We will say that it is not a sector of activity, it is rather professions. We will find administrative profiles in companies. We work in all sectors, but especially in the tertiary sector, personal and business services, commerce and mass distribution. »
Even if certain sectors seem at first glance less inclined to hire disabled workers, it is therefore often behind desks that we find them. Particularly in the construction sectors, there will be few disabled masons, however, accounting or secretarial functions may be carried out by disabled workers.
In addition to having to apply, there remains significant awareness-raising work for these job seekers. Applicants are frequently older, on average 45 years old, according to Cédric Corsin, because the disability occurs in most cases during life.
Disability means sick, means less productivity, it's a representation that we are trying to break. We have to work again with new projects which are often revenge on life.

Today, 85% of people with disabilities are not born with disabilities, but as a result of accidents and illnesses. “ What we are trying to make understood is that we must take this into account because it could concern us all one day. Cancer, depression, burn-out, an accident… Our society must have this in mind” confides Cédric Corsin, director of Cap Emploi 51.
Morals seem to be evolving slowly, but in the right direction. The unemployment rate of people with disabilities is falling. In 2023, more than 200,000 applicants will find employment in France.
