Poey-de-Lescar: cyclists on a family day at the Garos mill

From 8am, the cyclists got on their bikes to do a 60 km loop with 750 m of elevation gain on the winding and hilly roads between Béarn and the bottom of Chalosse: the castle of Momuy, the lady of Brassempouy, the crossing of Monségur and the coast of Mant before going back down towards the mill.

From 12 p.m., the accompanying guests had set up tables and chairs, made available by the owners of the place, in the mill garden in order to have a well-deserved aperitif. Michel and Bernard, in charge of the barbecue, offered grilled meats, Claudine and the other members of the office served salads, chips, cheese and dessert to comfort themselves after the effort.

For digestion, Jany and André Rey offered a visit and a demonstration of the mill, with the making of corn flour. A walk along the canal led the most curious to the Luy dam diverting the water necessary for the operation of the mill.

The Garos mill has existed since 1630 and depended on the Cabidos castle. It became the property of Jany’s family in 1902, and the milling activity ceased in 1970, but since 2000 Jany and André have been offering it for visits to schools and individuals. Equipped with three millstones, the mill produced flour from cereals harvested in the surrounding villages: wheat, barley, oats and corn.

Many left with flour, delighted with this excellent day.
