It’s already one of the most beautiful stories of this summer of football, shared between theEuro 2024the Copa America and the Olympic Games: the Georgia continues its fairy tale in the continental tournament and even achieved the feat of overcoming one of the favorites, Portugal (2-0), to qualify for the elimination phase and the round of 16! Indeed, the Crusaders finished ahead of the Czech Republic in third place in Group F with four points, behind Turkey (6 pts) and the winners of the 2016 edition (6 pts) in this very entertaining mini-championship. As the best third-place finishers, they will face… Spain, already met during the qualifiers (3-1 and 1-7 defeats of the Caucasian nation).

And for its very first participation in a major competition, Georgia was once again able to thank Georges Mikautadze who continues his incredible momentum with already a third goal scored, from the penalty spot, to double the lead just before the hour mark! Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who was expected to turn the corner after two lackluster first matches, opened the scoring in the 2nd minute, with an assist from FC number 22 Metz. While the saga surrounding his transfer is in full swing (with AS Monaco and RC Lens currently competing for his signature), his exploits on the international scene will certainly add a few hundred thousand euros to the price of his transfer, the second from Garnets after Ajax. With this new achievement, Mikautadze is the sole top scorer in the Euro after three matches with as many goals, scored in each of Georgia’s matches. Spain has been warned!
Note also that Zuriko Davitashvili (Bordeaux) came on after the 80th minute, for his third appearance during the Euro.
