Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a revised nuclear doctrine on Tuesday, declaring that a conventional attack on Russia by any nation backed by a nuclear power will be considered a joint attack on its country.
Vladimir Putin's approval of the new nuclear deterrence policy comes on the 1,000th day of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
It follows US President Joe Biden's decision to let Ukraine strike targets inside Russia with longer-range US-supplied missiles.
The signing of this doctrine, which stipulates that any massive air attack against Russia could trigger a nuclear response, testifies to Vladimir Putin's desire to threaten to use the country's nuclear arsenal to force the West to back down, while Moscow continues its offensive in Ukraine.
